When it comes to keeping children’s teeth healthy, prevention is always better than cure. One of the most effective ways dentists can help protect young teeth from decay is through fissure sealants.
Fissure sealants are a thin, protective coating applied to the chewing surfaces of the back teeth (molars and premolars). These teeth often have deep grooves and pits (called “fissures”), which can trap food and bacteria. Because these areas are hard to clean with a toothbrush, they’re at higher risk of developing cavities.
The sealant forms a smooth surface over the tooth, making it easier to keep clean and reducing the chance of decay.
Sealants are most commonly recommended for:
Children and teenagers whose permanent molars have just come through.
Kids with deep grooves or uneven surfaces on their teeth.
Children who are more prone to decay due to diet, oral hygiene, or family history.
Applying sealants early — usually soon after the permanent molars erupt (around ages 6–7 and again at 11–13) — gives the best protection.
The process is quick, painless, and non-invasive:
The tooth is cleaned and dried.
A special gel prepares the surface.
The sealant material is painted on.
A curing light hardens the sealant.
That’s it! No drilling, no needles, and it usually takes only a few minutes per tooth.
With proper care, fissure sealants can last for several years. During routine check-ups, your dentist will check them and reapply or repair them if needed.
